Waukegan Park District Partnering with the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County and the City of Waukegan to Host Community Recycling Event

Waukegan, Illinois (September 26, 2023) – The Waukegan Park District is partnering with the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) and the City of Waukegan to host a Community Recycling Event on Saturday, September 30, 2023 from 10am to 1pm at the Park Maintenance Facility, located at 2211 Ernie Krueger Circle. Confidential document shredding will also be available (four (4) box limit per vehicle).

Collected items will be reused, recycled, or donated to local non-profit organizations. The following items will be accepted, with some exceptions:

  • Accessories (backpacks, belts, duffle bags, hats, purses, and scarves)
  • Batteries (household batteries..no cellphone or rechargeable)
  • Bicycles
  • Books
  • Bulbs (including fluorescent)
  • Canned Food (sealed, not expired)
  • Clothes and Textiles
  • Diapers and Wipes (new)
  • Electronics
  • Eyeglasses, Hearing Aids, and Keys
  • Footwear (boots and shoes)
  • Linens (bedding, blankets, curtains, and towels)
  • Musical Instruments
  • Paint (latex and oil-based)
  • Plastic Film
  • Sports Equipment
  • Stuffed and Plush Animals

The Waukegan Park District is committed to being an environmental leader in the community through the use of sound environmental policies, procedures, and educational opportunities. The Waukegan Park District Board of Commissioners has adopted policies incorporating principles and best practices that focus on caring for the environment. 

The Community Recycling Event will be contact-free. Individuals must have all items and/or bags marked in the trunk of their vehicle where staff will collect the items. More information, including a list of accepted items, is available at waukeganparks.org/recycle.


About the Waukegan Park District

Established on December 26, 1916, the Waukegan Park District (WPD) has 53 properties and more than 742 acres of land, including the 18-hole Bonnie Brook and 9-hole Greenshire Golf Courses. Properties are managed to the highest environmental and conservation standards. Nationally accredited by the NRPA Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) and State accredited through the IAPD Distinguished Agency Accreditation, the WPD has received the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Triple Crown Award for receiving the GFOA’s Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award, and the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. The WPD was awarded the NRPA National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management in 2013, and was named a Gold Medal Finalist in 2012, 2013, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023.
