Waukegan, Illinois (September 9, 2024) – The Waukegan Park District is hosting the 9th Annual George Bridges 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at 9am at Hinkston Park, located at 810 Baldwin Avenue. In its ninth year, the event will have a superhero theme.
For an entry fee of $34, participants will receive a race packet and a commemorative race shirt. All proceeds from the 9th Annual George Bridges 5K Run/Walk will benefit Special Recreation Services of Northern Lake County – Waukegan, helping individuals with disabilities participate in camps, athletics, health and fitness programs, and much more.
The 9th Annual George Bridges 5K Run/Walk will feature a free kids race before the awards ceremony to encourage physical activity among children. The kids race is an opportunity for children from 5 years to 13 years to compete in a short fun run. Superhero-themed activities, including mask and cape decorating, will be offered throughout the event.
Medals will be awarded to the top overall female, top overall male, and top three females and males in the following age categories: 14 years and younger, 15 years to 19 years, 20 years to 24 years, 25 years to 29 years, 30 years to 34 years, 35 years to 39 years, 40 years to 44 years, 45 years to 49 years, 50 years to 54 years, 55 years to 59 years, 60 years to 64 years, 65 years to 69 years, 70 years to 74 years, 75 years to 79 years, 80 years and older.

Nationally accredited by the NRPA Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) and State accredited through the IAPD Distinguished Agency Accreditation, the WPD has received the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Triple Crown Award for receiving the GFOA’s Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award, and the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. The WPD was awarded the NRPA National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management in 2013, and was named a Gold Medal Finalist in 2012, 2013, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023.
