Welcome to SwimSmart! Through SwimSmart, we are increasing participant safety and comfort in the water while teaching them swimming strokes and techniques. SwimSmart participants progress through classes based on demonstrable skills. Lessons are available for infants/toddlers, children, and adults (in groups or individually). Our Swim Lessons

Indoor swim lessors are offered all year at the Field House, Sports, Fitness & Aquatics Center. Swim lessons are held on Tuesdays/Thursdays and Wednesdays/Fridays from 6pm to 8pm and Saturdays from 9am to 12pm. Families with more than one child living in the same household will receive a discount for each additional child participating in SwimSmart in the same session. To receive a discount, participants must be registered at the Belvidere Recreation Center, Field House Sports, Fitness & Aquatics Center, or the Jack Benny Center for the Arts.

Free Introductory Starter Class (Ages 6 – 7)
This beginner class is designed to introduce children who have never taken a swim lesson become comfortable in the water, a key factor in becoming a confident swimmer. In addition, the instructor will lay the groundwork on water safety, swimming fundamentals, pool rules and etiquette. This free class, sponsored by North Shore Gas, is for first time swimmers only.

Sharks & Minnows (Ages 6 months – 3)
Our Sharks and Minnows class helps your child adjust to the water, which is a key factor in becoming a confident swimmer. In addition to the instructor, one parent/guardian is encouraged to accompany children in the water to assist with the learning experience. Instructors demonstrate water safety skills to parents/guardians and children through the use of water games, songs, and positive reinforcement. A grandparent or trusted adult is also welcome to accompany the child!

Jellyfish Preschool I Swim Lessons (Ages 3 – 5)
This class is a beginner swimming class to help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. The students are encouraged and taught to overcome fear and/or uneasiness they may have in the water. This is done through the teaching of elementary skills and the incorporation of new games and activities to create a fun learning experience. This class is the right class if you child can: put face in water, bob, jump to teacher, kick on wall, front back float.

Starfish Preschool II Swim Lessons (Ages 3 – 5)
This class is for children who have either completed the Preschool 1 class or have some swimming ability. To be in this level, swimmers should be comfortable with floating, beginner stroke for five yards without help, and feel comfortable in deep water. The focus in this class is building up your child’s endurance and safety knowledge of the water environment. Skills to be covered are introduction to rhythmic breathing, front crawl stroke and back crawl.

Turtles Youth Swim Lessons Level I (Ages 6 – 16)
If your child has little or no swimming skills this class will help them become comfortable in an aquatic environment. This class focuses on water adjustment and covers basic water skills. This class is the right class if your child can: front and back float unaided, flutter kick ten yards, bob in the water, front and back glide, move comfortably in water.

Goldfish Youth Swim Lessons Level II (Ages 6 – 16)
This class is for children who have completed Youth Swim Lessons Level I or have some swimming ability such as, being comfortable in deep water and able to swim freestyle stroke for 15 yards without help. This class focuses on increasing swimming endurance and distance to build more confidence in deep water. This class is the right class if your child can: put whole self in water, front & back safety floats unaided, beginner stroke 15 yards, introduction to treading water, retrieve object from 5 feet.

Seahorses Youth Swim Lessons Level III (Ages 6 – 16)
This class is for children who have either completed Youth Swim Lessons. Level II or have good freestyle and backstroke skills. This class will concentrate on endurance swimming and learning new strokes. Skills to be covered include breaststroke, diving, backstroke and safety techniques. This is the right class if your child can: retrieve object from 5 feet, glide front and back with kick board, front crawl with rhythmic breathing for 15 yards, and tread water for 2 minutes.

Dolphins Swim Lessons Level IV (Ages 6 – 16)
If your child has completed Youth Level III or can demonstrate good breaststroke skills, they are now ready for Youth Level IV. This class focuses on perfecting and refining the breaststroke and introducing competitive starts and turns, introduction to butterfly and introduction to lifeguarding skills and other safety topics.

Adult Swim Lessons (Ages 16+)
While adult swim lessons fellow the same progression as the Youth Swim Lessons program, the class proceeds at a rate of instruction that is comfortable for adults. Whether it is a person’s first class or simply a stroke refinement lesson, the objective is to help the adult become a more proficient swimmer and enjoy the benefits of swimming.
