Swim LessonsSwimSmart Swim Lessons – For Your Benefit
  • Register online or at the Belvidere Recreation Center, Jack Benny Center, and The Field House Sports and Fitness Center. It’s convenient and easy!
  • Our Instructors are well trained and friendly.
  • Low student/instructor ratios mean more individualized instruction.
  • A Swim Lesson Coordinator monitors lessons to ensure quality programming and address questions and concerns.
  • Skill level and age are considered for proper placement of swimmers.

MAKE-UPS: In the event of pool closing or cancellation, the make-up session will take place one week after the last scheduled date of class.

Helpful Hints for Your First Class
  • Please arrive five to ten minutes before your class starts to allow time for getting changed.
  • Babies are required to wear swim diapers, cloth and disposable diapers are prohibited.
  • For the health of your child and others if your child is unwell it is recommended that you stay at home and miss the lesson.
  • Children under 3 years must be accompanied in the water by an adult before, after, and during their lesson.
  • You are welcome to talk to the Swim Coordinator or Supervisor at any time about your child’s progress.

 


Which is the right class for my child?

SHARKS & MINNOWS Parent with Infant or Toddler Swim Class  Ages 6 months-3

Our Sharks and Minnows class helps your child adjust to the water, which is a key factor in becoming a confident swimmer. In addition to the instructor, one parent/guardian is encouraged to accompany children in the water to assist with the learning experience. Instructors demonstrate water safety skills to parents/guardians and children through the use of water games, songs, and positive reinforcement. A grandparent or trusted adult is also welcome to accompany the child!

JELLYFISH Preschool 1 Swim Lessons  Ages 3-5

This class is for children who have little or no swimming skills. The focus in this class is on water adjustment, safety skills, and FUN! The skills that are covered are: front, back and side strokes, floats, blowing bubbles, kicking, safety, and water survival techniques.
To advance: your child needs to be able to float on front and back for 10 seconds, swim on their front, back, and sides for 5yds with an FD and 3yds without an IFD.

STARFISH Preschool II Swim Lessons  Ages 3-5

This class is for children who have either passed the Preschool I class or have some swimming ability. The focus in this class is building up your child’s endurance and safety knowledge of the water environment. Skills to be covered are: floating, introduction to rhythmic breathing, increasing distance in front, back and side strokes and water safety.
Prerequisites:  To enter this class your child needs to be able to float on front and back for 10 seconds, swim on their front, back, and sides for 5yds with and IFD and 3yds without an IFD.
To advance: your child needs to be able to jump in without assistance, float on front and back for 20 seconds. Also, be able to swim on front, back, and sides for 25yds with an IFD and 7yds without an IFD.

TURTLES Youth Swim Lessons Level I Ages 6-16

This class is for children who have passed Preschool II, or is a beginner in the water. This class will cover basic skills: front stroke, back strokes, side strokes, submerging, floating, kicking, and safety topics to make your child more aware of the aquatic environment.
To advance: your child needs to jump in without assistance, float on front and back for 10 seconds, swim on their front, back and sides for 25yds with or without an IFD and 7yds without an IFD.

GOLDFISH Youth Swim Lessons Level II Ages 6-16

In this class swimmers will continue to refine front, back and side strokes.  Skills to be covered are introducing breast stroke and rhythmic breathing, form and endurance in front, back and side strokes, treading water, and water safety.
Prerequisites: To enter this class swimmers need to be able to float on front and back for 10 seconds, swim on their front, back and sides for 25yds with and IFD and 7yds without an IFD.
To advance: your child needs to float on front and back for 20 seconds, swim on front with rotary breathing, back, and sides for 25yds with or without an IFD 12yds without an IFD. In addition, perform a sitting dive, a kneeling dive and tread water for 30 seconds.

SEA HORSES Youth Swim Lessons Level III Ages 6-16

Swimmers in this class will focus on endurance swimming and fine tuning all strokes learned in the SwimSmart Program.  This class will introduce butterfly stroke, flip turns, treading water, standing dives and stroke improvement. Skills to be covered include breaststroke form and endurance, diving, introducing butterfly stroke and safety.
Prerequisites:  To enter this class your child needs to float on front and back for 20 seconds, swim on front with rotary breathing, front symmetrical, back, and sides for 25yds with or without an IFD and 12yds without an IFD. In addition, perform a sitting dive, a kneeling dive and tread water for 30 seconds.
To advance: your child needs to float on front and back for 30 seconds, perform proper form in freestyle with rotary breathing, elementary back, back stroke, breast stroke and side stroke for 25yds)without an IFD. Demonstrate butterfly stroke for 15yds with fins and 5yds without fins. Perform open turns for all strokes, standing dive, tread water for 1 minute.

DOLPHINS Swim Lessons Level IV Ages 6-16

In this class swimmers will focuses on competitive swimming form and endurance. New skills to be covered include competitive starts and turns, endurance in the butterfly stroke and introduction to lifeguarding skills, fitness swimming and other safety topics. By the end of this class your child should be well prepared for the Waukegan Dolphins Club Swim Team!
Prerequisites: your child needs to float on front and back for 30 seconds, perform proper form in freestyle with rotary breathing, elementary back, back stroke, breast stroke and side stroke for 25yds without an IFD. Demonstrate butterfly stroke for 15yds with fins and 5yds without fins. Perform open turns for all strokes, standing dive, tread water for 1 minute.

ADULT CLASSES Adult Swim Lesson Ages 16+

While adult swim lessons follow the same progression as the Youth Swim Lessons program, the class proceeds at a rate of instruction that is comfortable for adults.  Whether it is a person’s first class or simply a stroke refinement lesson, the objective is to help the adult become a more proficient swimmer and enjoy the benefits of swimming.

OTTERS (Swim lessons for youth with disabilities) Ages 4-14

All lessons are based on the SwimSmart Program, but are designed around the individual swimmer. Whether your goal is to just get comfortable in the water, support sensory experiences, or become a competitive swimmer.Lessons are 30 minutes and have a maximum group size of two swimmers to one instructor. Swim times are offered between 10am until 1pm. Times will be assigned based on instructor availability and space in the pool. Registrants will receive time assignments the week the class begins.  Please contact Kari at 847-360-4763 to complete an initial assessment of your child’s current skill level.
